Local roundup: Lower Sussex posts 2nd shutout in row, blanks N.Y. in Major League softball regional

Lower Sussex posted its second shutout in as many days as it blanked New York, 6-0, in the Major League softball Eastern Regional on Sunday afternoon.

Camryn Ehlers pitched a five-hitter with six strikeouts and only one walk for the Delaware state champions (2-0) in the Little League tournament being played in Bristol, Conn.

Including a 7-0 victory over Maryland on Saturday, Ehlers has now allowed no runs, six hits and three walks with 15 strikeouts in 11 innings.

In Sunday’s win, Lower Sussex scored three runs in the third inning and three more in the fifth, finishing with 10 hits. Laniya Lewis went 3-for-3 while Jaya Shaub drove in three runs.

Kinsley Hall added two hits and an RBI for Lower Sussex, which plays again today at 7 p.m. against Rhode Island (1-0).

Junior League

Millsboro starts 1-2: Millsboro owns a record of 1-2 in the Eastern Regional after splitting a pair of games on Saturday.

The Delaware state champions edged New Jersey, 9-8, before falling to New York, 9-1, in the tournament being played in Orange, Conn.
Millsboro, which is in the Mid-Atlantic Pool of the tourney, fell to Maryland, 9-6, on Friday.

Baseball

Fox Post-2 9, Stahl Post-30 3: Sixth-seeded Fox Post 2 scored seven runs in the first two innings before knocking off No. 3 Stahl Post in the first round of the state tournament on Sunday at Wilson Field.

Only one game in the eight-team tournament was completed on Saturday before the other three contests were rained out.

Fox Post 2 will face No. 2 Middletown Post 25 today at 6 p.m. in the second round.

In Sunday’s victory, Michael Carrington went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. He also pitched the final two innings, allowing only two runs on one hit.

Starting pitcher Dominic Velazquez didn’t allow a hit in five innings but walked six and allowed a run while striking out seven.
Also for Fox Post 2, Evan Harris went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, three runs and an RBI, Velazquez had two RBI and Miguel Rivera scored twice.

Delaware Post-1 15, Harrington Post-7: Top-seeded Post 1 broke open the first-round contest with a nine-run fourth inning.

Harrington led 1-0 after scoring a run in the top of the second only to have Post 1 answer with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Post 1 had nine hits in the contest but also took advantage of six walks.

Ethan Hurd had two of Harrington’s five hits with Blaine Hansen, William Geppert and Bryan Bullock adding one apiece. Hurd also scored Harrington’s lone run.

Middletown Post-25 7, Nanticoke Post-6 0: The seventh-seeded Patriots forfeited the opening-round contest because it didn’t have enough players.
