Local roundup: Middletown Post 25 tops DelVets 14-3 in Legion baseball

Middletown Post 25 used a seven-run first inning to take control before picking up a 14-3 victory over DelVets in American Legion baseball on Monday evening.

John Weglarz, who had six RBI in the contest, capped off the victory with a grand slam in the bottom of the third of the contest played at Middletown High.

David Keane, Weglarz and Jake Walls combined to pitch a three-hitter in the five-inning victory. The victory was the third in a row for Middletown (11-5), which had nine hits in Monday’s game.

Delaware Post 1 sweeps Harrington: Harrington Post 7 suffered a pair of losses, 3-1, 11-8, to Delaware Post 1 in a doubleheader played on Sunday in Wilmington.

Senior League

M.O.T. 27, Smyrna-Clayton 8: M.O.T. captured the District I title on Sunday night after Danielle DiBenedictis hit a two-run homerun in the first inning.

Maddie Land, Summer Williams and DiBenedictis all had three hits apiece for M.O.T. while Jaycee Gephart and Sierra Husser both drove in three runs.

M.O.T. moves on to the state tournament, which starts on Saturday at Suburban. The Middletown-area squad went 2-0 in the district tourney, winning by a combined 39-10.

The state champion earns a berth in the Eastern Regional in Worcester, Mass. with the East champion then moving on to the World Series, which is hosted by Lower Sussex Little League in Roxana.

WNBA

Delle Donne picks up another honor: For the third time this season, Washington Mystics forward Elena Delle Donne was named the WNBA’s Eastern Conference Player of the Week.

The former Delaware star led the Mystics to a 2-1 record. This is the 15th time in her career that Delle Donne has earned a Player of the Week recognition.

For the week, Delle Donne averaged 20 ppg, 5.6 rpg and 2.3 apg. Delle Donne closed out the week with a stellar game against the Storm where she led all players with 29 points and seven rebounds.
