Local roundup: Newark National makes Major League finals by rallying past M.O.T. 8-7

Newark National rallied from a six-run deficit to edge M.O.T., 8-7, and reach the state finals in Major League baseball on Wednesday evening.

The District II champions will now face Milton (2-0) today at 7 p.m. at Milford. Newark National (2-1) needs a victory to force a second game for the title on Friday.

Milton, the two-time defending state champion, has won its last seven state tourney games since 2016. The state champion advances to the Mid-Atlantic Regional in Bristol, Conn.

Junior League

Cape/Georgetown 6, Naamans 3: The District III champions used a four-run first inning en route to the state tourney victory on Wednesday night.

Naamans (1-1) takes on Smyrna-Clayton (0-1) today at 7 p.m. at Millsboro with the winner playing Cape/Georgetown (1-0) for the state title on Friday night.

Jonathan Stokley drove in four runs for Cape/Georgetown while Malikye Wells had a pair of hits. Winning pitcher Nick Cox struck out 11.

In the third inning M.O.T.’s coach signals Jayden Duncan to get down and slide into third base when the northern all-stars scored four runs and upped their lead 6-0 over Newark.

American Legion

Fox Post 2 postponed again: The winners’ bracket final of the American Legion baseball state tournament was pushed back yet again due to rain.

Wednesday’s contest between top-seeded Delaware Post 1 and six-seed Fox Post 2 is now scheduled be played at 1 p.m. today at New Castle’s Wilson Field. The winner will advance to the championship game, which is now scheduled for Saturday at noon.

Four teams are left in the 10-team double-elimination tournament. Delaware Veterans Post 1 and the Post 10 Generals will play an elimination game Friday at noon.

The winner of that contest will play the loser of today’s game on Friday at 4 p.m. in the losers’ bracket final with the winner advancing to the title game on Saturday. If a second championship game is necessary, it will be played at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Fox Post 2 has not played since Monday after back-to-back rainouts. The Dover-area squad is 2-0 so far with victories over Stahl Post 30 and Canal Post 25 Middletown.

The state champion earns a spot in the Mid-Atlantic Regional in Purcellville, Va. starting Aug. 8.

Senior League

Naamans headed to Series: Delaware state champion Naamans captured the Senior League East Region title with an 8-1 victory over host West Deptford, N.J. on Wednesday.

After winning both its games in the state tourney, Naamans went 5-0 in the regional. The New Castle County squad moves on to the Senior League World Series, which starts this weekend in Easley, S.C.

8-10 year olds

State tourney rained out: Wednesday’s state tournament game between Camden-Wyoming and Newark National was postponed by rain.
The two teams will try to play again today at 7 p.m. at Canal.

Softball

Major League

Lower Sussex game rained out: The Lower Sussex-Connecticut game scheduled for Wednesday in the Eastern Regional in Bristol, Conn. was postponed by rain.

The Delaware state champions, who are 3-1 in the tournament, will now face Connecticut at 4 p.m. today in an elimination game. The only other teams remaining are unbeaten Rhode Island and Pennsylvania, which square off at 1 p.m.

The losers’ bracket finals are then slated for 9 a.m. on Friday with the East championship game to follow at noon. The champion advances to the World Series in Portland, Oregon.
