Local roundup: Smyrna-Clayton makes District I finals in Senior League softball

Smyrna-Clayton downed Felton-Harrington, 10-6, on Saturday evening to advance to the District I finals in Senior League softball.

Smyrna-Clayton (3-1) takes on Milford (2-0) today at 4:30 p.m. at Middletown in the district championship game.

If Smyrna-Clayton wins, a second game will follow 30 minutes after the first one.

Milford, behind the pitching of Lauren Dickerson, beat Smyrna-Clayton, 12-10, on Friday night.

The district champion advances to the two-team state tourney, which starts on July 11 at Suburban. The Senior League World Series will be held at Lower Sussex again.

In Saturday’s rain-shortened victory, winning pitcher Jen Payton didn’t walk any in five innings. Rachel Brown, Cheyenne Silvas, Jade Rivera, Payton and Emma Lagarelli all had multiple hits for Smyrna-Clayton.

Payton Moore struck out six in four innings for Felton-Harrington, which got multiple-hit games from Taylor Jefferson, Cassie Dempsey, Brooke Webb and Darlena Murphy.


American Legion

DelVets sweeps Post: DelVets Post 1 swept Nanticoke Post 6, 11-2 and 8-1, in an American Legion doubleheader on Saturday in Seaford.

DelVets broke open the first game by scoring a total of seven runs in its final two at-bats.

Trace Hitchens (1 run) and Dylan Niblett (1 RBI) had two hits apiece for Nanticoke.

Canal Post-25 15, Post 10 Generals 3: The Middletown-area squad picked up the victory in the first game of a scheduled twinbill on Saturday.
