Local Roundup: Smyrna High hockey team downs Riders 3-1

Lexi Moore tallied three goals to pace Smyrna High to a 3-1 victory over Caesar Rodney in Henlopen Northern Division field hockey on Sunday afternoon.

The contest was played at the University of Delaware’s Rullo Stadium as part of the annual Turf Bowl event.

Moore scored twice in the first half before her goal with 52 seconds remaining sealed the Eagles’ victory after the Riders closed within 2-1. Smyrna held advantages of 10-1 in shots and 9-2 in corners.

Rebecca Webb scored with 26:40 left for CR with goalie Maya Gray making six saves.

A.I. DuPont 3, St. Thomas More 1: In another Turf Bowl game on Sunday, the Tigers scored a pair of first-half goals before topping the Ravens.

College cross country

Dover grad takes first: Dover High grad Gavin Williams, who runs for Howard University, won the individual men’s title at the Delaware State Alumni XC Invitational on Friday.

Williams covered the 800 meters in a time of 27:12.

College field hockey

Connecticut 3, Delaware 0: The No. 10 Blue Hens had multiple opportunities, but in the end the No. 3 Huskies picked up the win.

The Hens (8-3) got off a game-high five shots early in the first quarter but were unable to finish on the occasions. Senior Ally Pollak and junior Femke Strien led UD with three shots apiece while Pollak contributed two shots on goal.

Redshirt senior Sydney Rhodes collected four saves.

Women’s soccer

Hofstra 3, Delaware 2: The Pride scored the final two goals of the contest to edge the Blue Hens in a CAA game on Sunday.

Delaware (4-2 CAA, 9-6 overall) got goals from Sara D’Appolonia and Jill Vasallo.
