Local Roundup: Smyrna, IR wrestlers win; Raven boys, girls hoop teams triumph

Smyrna High won 12 of 14 matches and had eight pins en route to a 62-9 victory over Cape Henlopen High in a Henlopen Conference Northern Division contest on Wednesday night.

Josh Dailey (182 pounds), Tony Wuest (195), Hunter Moyer (220), Joseph Natarcola (106), Jaxson Al-Chokhachy (113), Easley Pierson (120), Nick Natarcola (132) and Greg Baum (145) all won via pin for the Eagles.

Dakota Kerr (170) and Donald McAlpine (132) won by decision while Ryan Kelley earned at major-decision at 138 pounds.

Cape was led by heavyweight Jonah Robertson who had a pin.

Indian River 59, Lake Forest 6: Chris Saylor (106), Will Rayne (120), Ta’Jon Knight (126), Dylan Ely (132) Eric Winstead (170), Zach Schultz (195) and Ramond Turner (285) had pins in the Henlopen South victory.

Girls’ basketball

Sussex Tech 46, Caesar Rodney 32: Janiya Stevens scored a game-high 15 points as the Ravens remained unbeaten with the Henlopen North win.

Boys’ basketball

Sussex Tech 67, Caesar Rodney 56: Jaquan Burton’s 20 points paced the Ravens in the Henlopen North contest.

Shaft Clark netted a game-high 23 points for Caesar Rodney.

College basketball

MEN, Marymount 72, Wesley 70: The Wolverines’ three-pointer attempt at the buzzer was blocked as they fell in a CAC contest.

Brian Cameron paced Wesley with 25 points and Mychal Stefandies netted 20. JW Lawson followed with 12 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

WOMEN, Marymount 83, Wesley 34: Monshea Newsome-Murray netted a team-high 15 points along with three assists, three rebounds and two steals in the Wolverine defeat.

Shelby Johnson had a game-high 11 rebounds and added five points. Stacey O’Neale tallied seven points while Tiyanna Gibbs chipped in with six points and six rebounds.

College swimming

UD wins two CAA awards: Kevin Basch and Jacob Lukens won the CAA Swimmer and Diver awards respectively following their performances this past weekend.

Basch broke the UD school record in the 1000-meter freestyle with a time of 9:18.71. It is the fastest regular season time in the CAA since 2008.

Lukens won the three-meter board this last weekend against Drexel.
