Hens’ Carpenter earns rookie honor: Delaware freshman first baseman Joseph Carpenter was named to the Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American team on Wednesday.

Carpenter is the lone Colonial Athletic Association representative on the list of the nation’s top rookies.

The CAA Rookie of the Year and All-Rookie team member started every game at first base for Delaware and put together a 24-game hitting streak to help tally a .300 batting average. His .459 slugging percentage and .827 OPS led the team to go along with his share in the team lead for triples with four.

Carpenter reached base in 44 of the final 46 games and had hits in 30 of the final 33 contests. After losing his hitting streak, he bounced back with a 4-for-6 night at UMBC with a double and a home run.

State finals slated for tonight: The DIAA boys’ lacrosse state championship game between Cape Henlopen High and Salesianum was postponed on Wednesday because of predicted severe weather.

The contest is now slated to be played today at 6 p.m. at Caesar Rodney. Tickets for the game are $7 and will be available on site by 5:15 p.m.

The boys’ lacrosse tournament has now had several delays because of thunderstorms and school graduations. Originally, the state finals were slated to be played last Friday or Saturday.

Cape Henlopen hasn’t played since last Wednesday when it beat Archmere in the state semifinals. Sallies beat CR on Sunday in a semifinal contest that was postponed twice.
