LOCAL ROUNDUP: UD baseball team rallies past William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Delaware rode a pair of ninth-inning and 10th-inning runs to a 6-4 victory over William & Mary in CAA baseball on Sunday at Plumeri Park.

The Blue Hens (12-9 CAA, 28-23), who swept the three-game series, trailed 4-2 going into their last at-bat. But, after tying the game in the ninth, Dover High grad Jordan Hutchins doubled home Calvin Scott with the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning.

Ben Werkheiser then singled home Hutchins to give the Hens their 6-4 cushion.

Reliever Clay Conaway (Sussex Central) came in to record the final two outs after the Tribe brought the tying run to the plate.

Freshman Chris Ludman turned in the strongest start of his career, going six innings and allowing just one run and three hits. The righty struck out a career-best 11 in earning a no-decision.

The Hens struck first when Hutchins tripled with one man out in the second. The shortstop scored one batter later on a single by Diaz Nardo (Cape Henlopen).

“Today was a big character win for this team,” said coach Jim Sherman. “Our guys today refused to give in and were resilient. I thought the guys were really determined to get the sweep today. We had really good at-bats and showed great discipline when William & Mary really started to struggle with their control.”
