Local roundup: Velazquez hurls 1-hitter, K’s 15 as Dover wins 6-0

Dominic Velazquez pitched a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts as Dover High blanked Delmar, 6-0, in Henlopen Conference baseball on Friday afternoon.

The victory was the ninth in a row for the Senators (10-1 overall) while the loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Wildcats (8-2).

The Senators scored three runs in the first inning and three more in the sixth as Dover out-hit the Wildcats, 6-1. Velazquez threw 107 pitches before Hiram Davis threw the final five in the contest.


Indian River 6, Cape Henlopen 1: Abigail O’Shields threw a one-hitter and struck out 15 as the Indians (8-5) won their third game in a row.

IR had four extra-base hits among its eight hits. Savannah O’Shields had a triple and double for the Indians, who led 3-0 after two innings.

Carlin Quinn had a double for the Vikings’ only hit.

College lacrosse

MEN, Massachusetts 11, Delaware 9: The Blue Hens rallied to tie the game going into the fourth quarter only to fall to the No. 15 Minutemen on a pair of last-minute goals.

Delaware pulled even at 9-9 on an unassisted goal by Charlie Kitchen with only 2:57 remaining. But UMass answered with goals 2:06 remaining and then just 27 seconds left to put away the victory.

Delaware closes the regular season with a record of 3-2 in the CAA, 10-4 overall. The Minutemen are 4-1, 10-4.

Clay Miller netted a team-high three goals for the Hens with Kitchen adding two. UD goalie Matt DeLuca made 13 saves.
