LOCAL ROUNDUP: Wesley women earn win over Alverno

The Wesley College women’s basketball team earned their first win since the season opener when they grabbed a 71-61 victory over Alverno College in day two of the St. Pete’s Classic in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Brionna Johnson powered the team to the win with a 16-point, 15-rebound performance, leading eight different Wolverines in scoring. Alexus Stroud added 14 points off the bench while Kiara Johnson and Tiyanna Gibbs each finished with nine points. Monshea Newsome-Murray had seven points, eight rebounds, and a team-high seven assists to help the squad to a win.

Wesley shot just 35.0 percent from the floor, but more than half of their field goals came from behind the arc. The team drilled a season-high 11 three-pointers, shooting 35.5 percent from behind the line to down Alverno. Wesley also won the rebounding battle, grabbing 43 rebounds, including 11 on the offensive end, while limiting Alverno to 34.

Temple 100, Delaware State 59: Two double digit unanswered first half runs by the Temple Owls (6-4), in addition to six players scoring in double figures at game’s end, turned out to be too much for the Delaware State women’s basketball team (2-8) to overcome Saturday afternoon on the road.

With this defeat, the Lady Hornets failed register back-to-back wins for the first time this season, while Temple tallied its highest scoring total of the season (100) on its way to its third consecutive victory.
