Local roundup: Wolverines qualify for ECAC men’s soccer tournament

The Wesley College men’s soccer team qualified for the 2018 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship Tournament, as announced by the conference on Monday.

Wesley finished the regular season 14-4-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the Atlantic East Conference to qualify as the third seed in Pod Four of the ECAC Tournament. Wesley’s pod will be hosted by Stevenson University starting on Saturday, Nov. 10. The Wolverines will take on former Capital Athletic Conference foe, second-seeded Penn St. Harrisburg in their first-round contest on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

The winner of that game will face either Stevenson or Franciscan in the pod finals on Sunday. The winner of the pod final will advance to the semifinal rounds, starting on Saturday, Nov. 17.

It is the ninth time in program history that the Wesley men’s soccer team has qualified for the ECAC Tournament and the first time since the 2011 season.

Women’s soccer

Wolverines make ECAC tourney: The Wesley College women’s soccer team earned a spot in the 2018 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship Tournament, as announced by the organization on Monday.

Wesley finished the regular season 9-4-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the Atlantic East Conference to be selected as the fourth seed in Pod Three. Wesley will take on the top seed in the pod and host Farleigh Dickinson University – Florham on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 12 p.m.

The winner of that game will face either Widener or Rutgers-Camden in the pod finals on Sunday. The winner of the pod final will advance to the semifinal rounds, starting on Saturday, Nov. 17.

It is the second time in program history that the Wesley women’s soccer team qualified for the ECAC Tournament. Their last appearance was during the 2014 season.

Local tennis

Dover junior team make national championships: A junior tennis team from Dover will compete in the 2018 USTA Junior Team Tennis 18U National Championships, held at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., Nov. 9-11.

The 2018 USTA Junior Team Tennis 18U National Championships will bring together the top 32 teams from various USTA Sections throughout the country. This is the second consecutive year the event will be held at the USTA National Campus.

The National Championships serves as the crown jewel of USTA Junior Team Tennis as the nation’s top teams compete for the title. Each year the USTA crowns a national champion in two age divisions (14U and 18U) in both the Intermediate and Advanced play divisions.

The Dover team advanced to the National Championships by winning the USTA Middle States Section championship. They will be competing in the Intermediate division.

Local sports

Delaware Hall of Fame holding public nomination event: The Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame will be holding a public nomination event for induction candidates for the 2019 Hall of Fame this Sunday, Nov. 11, at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino.

The event will take place in Room B of The Festival Buffet Restaurant inside Dover Downs Casino. The event will be held from 1-3 p.m. Light refreshments will be available.

The public is invited to attend the event and nominate a deserving candidate in-person for the 2019 Delaware Sports Hall of Fame. Nominators will have a maximum of five minutes to speak about their nominee, highlighting accomplishments as an athlete, coach, official, or administrator, to DSMHOF board members.

This will be the lone opportunity for the public to make nominations in-person for the 2019 class.

Formal athletic resumes, letters of recommendation, and supporting documents may also be presented to the board at the nomination event. Nominators will have an opportunity to speak on a first-come, first-served basis.
