Marquis Gillis, Milford High School

Milford High junior Marquis Gillis has been voted by readers as the inaugural Delaware State News Athlete of the Week.

The running back and defensive back made plays all over the field to lead his Buccaneers to a 34-0 season-opening victory over Indian River High last Friday night.

Gillis, in his first game since switching from receiver to running back and from cornerback to safety over the offseason, racked up more than 150 total yards with two rushing touchdowns on offense.

He also picked off a pass on defense and ran a punt return back for a 76-yard touchdown.

Lake Forest High athletes Josephine Ledford, a cross country runner, and Isaiah Johnson, a football player, also received votes.

Athlete of the Week nominations

The Delaware State News is featuring a high school Athlete of the Week each week during the 2019-2020 school year.

The Athlete of the Week is nominated and chosen by our readers. The nominating period starts at 2 p.m. on Friday and ends at noon on Monday. A voting period follows from 5 p.m. Monday through 5 p.m. Wednesday.
