Roundup: Brandywine tops M.O.T. 9-1 to reach Major League baseball state finals

Brandywine downed M.O.T., 9-1, on Tuesday night to reach the finals of the Major League baseball state tournament.

The District II champions will take on Milton today at 7 p.m. at Millsboro.

Brandywine needs a win to force a second game for the championship on Thursday night.

In beating M.O.T., Brandywine avenged an 11-7 loss to the District I champions in the first game of the tournament.

The state champion moves on to the Mid-Atlantic Regional in Bristol, Conn.

8-10 tournament

Newark National 9, M.O.T. 5: The District II champions won the state title with the victory on Tuesday night in Smyrna-Clayton.

Newark National finished 3-0 in the three-team tournament.

Senior League

Naamans 1, New York 0: The Delaware state champions won a rain-shortened five-inning game on Tuesday to reach the East Regional finals.

Naamans will face the host New Jersey squad today at 1 p.m. in the finals in Thorofare, N.J. The East champion earns a spot in the Senior League World Series in Easley, S.C.

Naamans (4-1) has won three straight games — all by shutout — to get out of the losers’ bracket.

SOFTBALL

Major League

Canal in East finals: Canal beat Maine 15-2 and then Connecticut 6-2 on Tuesday to reach the East Regional championship game.

The Delaware state champions play in the East finals on Thursday at noon in Bristol, Conn. The winner earns a berth in the World Series in Portland, Oregon.

Canal is now 4-0 in the regional.

Junior League

New Jersey 10, Nanticoke-Laurel 7: The Delaware state champions were ousted from the East Regional after their second straight loss in the tournament on Tuesday.

Nanticoke-Laurel finished 3-2 in the tourney, which is being played in Orange, Conn. The Sussex County squad was the top seed in the Mid-Atlantic bracket.

College athletics

Wesley names ‘Hall’ class: The Wesley College Athletics Hall of Fame will induct 13 individuals and a team as the Class of 2017 at the annual Hall of Fame ceremony as part of Wesley’s Homecoming festivities.

The Class of 2017 includes Brittany Block ‘08 (soccer), Patricia (Casarotto) Jilek ‘07 (basketball), Mike Judy ‘01 (football), Chris Miller ‘06 (lacrosse), Jessica Morgan ‘09 (softball), Tim O’Keefe ‘00 (lacrosse), Robin Smith ‘07 M’09 (basketball), Michele Stabley (basketball), Derrick Tate ‘97 (football), T’Neisha Turner ‘06 (basketball), Danielle Vincent ‘09 M’11 (field hockey), Chris Warrick ‘07 (football), Freeman Williams III ‘99 (basketball) and the 1965-66 men’s basketball team.

This year Wesley’s Homecoming festivities will start on Oct. 13.
