Roundup: Camden-Wyoming earns Division I victory over M.O.T. in 8-10 baseball

Camden-Wyoming edged M.O.T., 8-7, on Sunday evening to capture the District I championship in the 8-10 baseball tournament.

The title gives Camden-Wyoming a berth in the three-team state tournament, which starts on Tuesday in Milton. Milton is the District III champion.

Camden-Wyoming finished 4-1 in the District I tournament, including a 2-1 mark against M.O.T. Middletown went 5-2, winning four straight games to force a second championship game.

Major League

Lower Sussex 14, M.O.T. 13: Lower Sussex used a grand slam to edge M.O.T. in extra innings in the opening game of the state tournament on Sunday evening.

The District III champions will face District II champion Newark National today at 7 p.m. at New Castle Little League.

M.O.T., which was 4-0 in all-star games before the setback, plays again on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the losers’ bracket of the three-team tourney.

Eddie Stranahan (4-for-5, 2 RBI) led off the seventh inning with a homerun for M.O.T., which had 18 hits in the game. Also pacing Middletown were Anthony Contessa (3-for-5, 2 runs), Ian Keane (2-for-4, 3 RBI).

American Legion

Fox Post-2 7, Stahl Post-30 2: Fox Post 2 used a five-run second inning to take control of the state tournament game on Sunday evening.

The Dover-area squad will play again on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at St. Mark’s High in the winners’ bracket.

Both squads finished with eight hits apiece in Sunday’s seven-inning contest played at Caravel Academy. Fox Post 2 limited Stahl to single runs in the first and fifth innings.


Senior League

Smyrna-Clayton 13, New York 6: The Delaware state champions evened their record at 1-1 in the East Regional with the win on Sunday.

Smyrna-Clayton faces Pennsylvania (2-0) today at 11:30 a.m. in the tournament being played in Worcester, Mass.

In Sunday’s victory, Smyrna-Clayton was leading only 5-4 before scoring five runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth.

Smyrna-Clayton finished with 16 hits as Emma Lagarelli (4 hits, 2 RBI) and Tanaya Wilson (3 hits) led the way. Winning pitcher Jennifer Payton struck out three.

Junior League

District-III 5, New York 3: The Delaware state champions, representing Laurel, Millsboro and Nanticoke, improved to 2-0 in the East Regional with the win on Sunday.

District III blanked New Jersey, 10-0, in its opener on Saturday in the tournament being held in Orange, Conn. District III is slated to face Pennsylvania today at 9 a.m.
