Roundup: Cape, IR earn wins in baseball

Zach Gelof and Austin Elliott both homered to power Cape Henlopen High to a 6-1 victory over Sussex Tech in a season-opening Henlopen North baseball game on Friday afternoon.

Winning pitcher David Erickson and Gelof combined on a three-hitter for the Vikings, who built a 5-0 lead after scoring three runs in the fifth.

Pitcher Brady Parks struck out seven for the Ravens.

Indian River 15, Woodbridge 1: Jacob Anderson drove in six runs on a pair of triples as IR opened the season with a South win.

The Indians trailed 1-0 before scoring five runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Pitcher Mitch Megee threw a five-inning one-hitter with four strikeouts and no walks to earn the win. Mark Smith, Anderson, Jason Killen and Kyle Firle all had multiple hits in IR’s 12-hit attack.

Brock Keeler had the Raiders’ hit.

Softball

Indian River 10, Woodbridge 1: The Indians used a four-run second inning to open up a 6-1 advantage in the season-opening South win.

IR’s Abigail O’Shields struck out 10 while pitching a five-hitter. Braydee Whitman, Julie Bomhardt, and Kayler Townsend all had multiple hits for the Indians.

Taylor Scott had a pair of hits for the Raiders.

Lacrosse

BOYS, Milford 17, Lake Forest 11: The Buccaneers led by only a goal before outscoring the Spartans, 8-3, in the fourth quarter of the Henlopen South win.

Sophomore Alex Herka collected seven goals and an assist with Jonathan Gaglione adding five goals for Milford. Shane Gaglione stopped 22 shots.

Sussex Tech 16, Wicomico, Md. 4: Nathaniel Quillin had six goals and four assists with Kolby Wyatt adding five goals in the Ravens’ victory.

Senior Teddy Letonoff won 14 faceoffs and picked up 11 groundballs. Hunter Severs made 13 saves.

GIRLS, Polytech 16, Sussex Academy 2: Cecilia Carter scored five goals while Maddie McKay and Claire Fuchs added three each to pace the Panthers.

Eight players had goals for Polytech, which outscored the Seahawks, 9-1, in the second half. Shannon Stephan made nine saves.

Kelsey Smith and Molly Martiner each scored for Sussex Academy while Grace Scott made 12 saves

Cape Henlopen 15, Stephen Decatur, Md. 9: Alia Marshall and Mallory Jones tallied four goals apiece with Lindsay Monigle adding three goals and three assist for the Vikings.

Cape, which got goals from seven different players, led 9-3 at halftime. The Vikings held a 31-17 edge in shots.

Girls’soccer

Delmar 7, Delmarva Christian 0: Ashlyn Carr netted three goals to lead the Wildcats to the victory.

Ashlynn Hastings, Monyae Alexander, MacKenzie Niblett and Logan Walls added Delmar’s other goals.
