DSU picked last in MEAC poll: The Delaware State football team will have plenty to prove in the upcoming season after being picked to finish 11th in the 11-team Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference football poll released on Friday.

Defending champ North Carolina Central is the voters’ choice to capture the 2017 MEAC title. The Eagles have won or shared the conference title in each of the last three years.

Despite winning just one game in the last two years, Delaware State coach Kenny Carter thinks the Hornets are poised for a turnaround this year.

“I believe we have taken the right steps to be competitive in the MEAC this season,” he said. “We return more than 50 players from the 2016 squad, led by many sophomores and juniors who have gained valuable experience while developing a dogged determination through the struggles of the last two years. In addition, we have our strongest class of newcomers since I arrived and several players who sat out due to injury last year are back and ready to contribute.”

Ten DelState players garnered MEAC preseason recognition. Five Hornets were named to the second team, while five others received All-MEAC third-team recognition.

Topping Delaware State’s All-MEAC preseason honorees are running back Mike Waters, wide receiver Mason Rutherford, linebacker Malik Harris and offensive linemen Joshua Fala and Cade Pedro.

Delaware State players selected to the All-MEAC third team are RB/KR Brycen Alleyne, linebacker Brian Cavicante, cornerback Keyjuan Selby, placekicker Wisdom Nzidee and punter Fidel Romo-Martinez.
