Roundup: DelState men win 2 of 3 in series against Norfolk State

Delaware State rode the play of two freshmen to a 6-4 MEAC North baseball win over Norfolk State in the series finale between the teams at Marty Miller Field on Sunday.

The Hornets (12-9 MEAC, 17-21 overall) took two of three from the Spartans (15-5, 22-17) this weekend and claimed the season series five games to four.

The DSU win also prevented Norfolk State from clinching its third straight division title.

Starting pitcher Garrett Lawson (Dover) threw seven solid innings and fellow freshman Tyler Collins smacked a two-run homer to lead the Hornets.

Lawson (5-4) earned the win after allowing five hits and two runs, while striking out seven in seven innings.

Collins, playing in his second game with the Hornets, hit a two-run blast in the eighth to give DSU a 6-2 lead.

Norfolk State scored two runs in the ninth inning to pull to within 6-4, and had the potential tying runs on base when Hornet closer Darrien Ragins retired Roger Hall on a pop out to short to end the game.

UNC-Wilmington 5, Delaware 0: The Blues were blanked in the series finale of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series.

The Seahawks (21-22, 9-6 CAA) held the Hens (24-17, 10-8 CAA) to a season-low five hits.

Delaware is 1-7 this season when scoring two runs or less.

Elon 1, Delaware 0: Elon leftfielder Alaina Hall delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Phoenix.

Elon (32-18 overall, 9-8 Colonial Athletic Association) took the weekend series after the teams split a doubleheader on Saturday. The Blue Hens dropped to 20-26 overall and 7-11 in league play, and are now two-and-a-half games behind the Phoenix in the race for the final CAA Tournament berth.

Delaware will need to sweep UNCW next weekend, and have either Hofstra get swept by Drexel or Elon get swept by 14th-ranked James Madison, to qualify for the league tournament on May 10-12.

Blue Hen righthander Jordan Cargile and Elon lefty Kiandra Mitchum were locked in a pitchers’ duel for the second consecutive afternoon, producing the teams’ second straight 1-0 decision.

Mitchum allowed just three singles and no walks while striking out three, as she improved to 18-11 on the year. Cargile dropped to 15-13 despite giving up just one unearned run on seven hits in a complete game effort.
