Roundup: Dover rallies to win District I Big League title

Dover rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Felton, 3-2, and clinch the District I title in Big League baseball on Sunday night.
Dakota Graham knocked in A.J. Johnson with the winning run as Dover improved to 13-0.

The title means that Dover’s Kevin Turner will be the manager for the District I all-star squad, which earns an automatic berth in the Eastern Regional. Dover will host the regional again beginning on July 18.

Johnson was the winning pitcher in Sunday’s game, striking out seven in three innings without allowing a run. Sean Hanhauser added a hit and an RBI for Dover.
John Steele pitched a complete game with four strikeouts for Felton while Cole Gary had a hit an an RBI.

Senior League

Felton-Harrington 6, M.O.T. 5: In a game played Sunday night, Andrew Berardicelli went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and two runs to pace Felton-Harrington to the opening-round victory.

Winning pitcher Josiell allowed only two hits with nonearned runs in six 2/3 innings for Felton-Harrington, which was slated to play Camden-Wyoming in the second game at Dover on Monday evening.

Softball

Reed named All-American: Polytech High grad Shaina Reed was recently named a second-team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

A pitcher, Reed helped lead the Panthers to their first softball state championship in the spring. She’ll continue her career at Florida State College.

College basketball

DSU hires women’s assistants: First-year Delaware State women’s basketball head coach Barbara Burgess completed her staff with the hiring of assistant coaches Vanessa Watson, Beverly Lockett and Donell Thomas on Monday.

Watson is a veteran with 30 years of head coaching experience at Malcolm X Shabazz High School in Newark, N.J. while Lockett comes to Delaware State from the Dallas, Texas area after 16 years of coaching in the high school and AAU ranks.

Thomas is a former Delaware State men’s basketball standout (1989-93) who returns to his alma mater after spending three seasons as the head boys’ coach at Caesar Rodney High and two seasonsas an assistant with the Wesley College men’s program.

Local auto racing

Ketterman wins again: It was a very fast night at U.S. 13 Dragway on Friday night.

It was so fast that in order to make the Bad 8 Open Wheel field, you had to run a 7.437 E.T. or quicker.

W.R. Ketterman of Salisbury, Md. recorded his second win of the season in Bad 8 Open while Carlton Mason of Pocomoke, Md. took the win in Bad 8 Full.

It was Ben Parks of Salisbury coming out on top in Top Eliminator, picking up his third win of the season.

Other winners on the night included: Tim Foskey, Jr. of Rhodesdale, Md. in Pro; Sherell Blake of Delmar, Md. in Pro Bike; Ronn Carey of Dagsboro in Street; Joe Schwartz of Winter Park, Fla. In Hot Rod; Cody Drummond of Laurel in Jr. Dragster 1 and Jacob Bowie of Greensboro, Md. in Jr. Dragster 2.

WNBA

Delle Donne named Player of the Month: Elena Delle Donne of the Chicago Sky was named the WNBA’s Eastern Conference Player of the Month for games played in June.

Delaware native Delle Donne, the Eastern Conference Player of the Week in each of the first three weeks of the season, earned the Eastern Conference Player of the Month for the second time in her career. She helped the Sky to a 5-5 record in June by averaging a league-leading 28.7 points, a WNBA record for the first 10 games of a season (surpassing Cappie Pondexter’s mark of 25.7 points with the Phoenix Mercury in 2008).
Delle Donne also led the East in rebounding (9.9 rpg) and blocks (2.6 bpg), and was second in free throw shooting percentage (.978, 91-of-93).
