Roundup: East Carolina pulls away for 63-57 hoop win over Hornets

East Carolina took control in the closing minutes to post a 63-57 victory over Delaware State in men’s basketball on Saturday evening.

The contest was tied 48-48 with 5:28 remaining before the Pirates (4-4) finished the game on a 15-9 run.

The Hornets (2-7) pulled within three with 1:06 left but couldn’t get any closer, Shawn Williams sank a pair of foul shots with 17 seconds on the clock to seal the victory.

For DelState, Artem Tavakalyan scored a game-high 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting — including 3-of-4 shooting from three-point range. He also grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.

Simon Okulue added 14 points for the Hornets, who led 24-23 at halftime. There were five lead changes in the contest with DelState holding as much as a four-point advantage early in the second half.

Southern Virginia 93, Wesley 63: The Wolverines dropped the Capital Athletic Conference decision on the road on Saturday.

Mychal Stefanides had 16 points to pace Wesley with Brandon Lewis adding 12.

WOMEN, Southern Virginia 82, Wesley 76: Tiyanna Gibbs and Monshea Newsome-Murray led the Wolverines with 18 points apiece in the CAC loss.

Gibbs also pulled down seven rebounds and stole the ball twice while Newsome-Murray grabbed six boards and dished out four assists.

Megan Shacklock also notched double-digit points with 11 points.

Princeton 78, Delaware 60: Junior Nicole Enabosi led the Blue Hens (4-4) with 22 points and 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the year in the nonconference loss.

Sophomore Samone DeFreese added 15 points and eight rebounds while Abby Gonzales notched 11 points, four rebounds and three steals.

Boys’ basketball

Conrad 45, Seaford 37: Ethan Lambert netted 14 points for the Blue Jays in the season-opening loss.

Laurel 55, Delmarva Christian 42: The Bulldogs picked up the nonconference win.

Girls’ basketball

Delmarva Christian 49, Delmar 46: The Royals outscored the Wildcats, 18-12, in the fourth quarter to rally for the victory.

Camryn Breasure (12 points, 12 rebounds) and Abby Agapito (12 points, 9 rebounds) paced Delmarva Christian.

Cape Henlopen 48, Smyrna 22: The Vikings opened the season with a Henlopen North victory on Friday night.
