Roundup: Riders top Sanford 3-1 in volleyball

Caesar Rodney High won the first two sets before posting a 3-1 victory over Sanford in a nonconference volleyball match on Monday.

The Riders won by scores of 25-20, 25-17, 19-25, 25-13 to improve to 3-1.

CR had lost to the Warriors two years in a row.

The Riders were led by Sara Cessna (12 kills, 2 blocks, 9 digs), Chloe Therese Mangubat (5 kills, 3 aces, 15 digs), Jessica Crawford (4 kills, 3 aces, 10 assists) and Ana Lucia Villabona (4 kills, 1 ace, 2 blocks, 8 digs, 10 assists)

Sussex Central 3, Howard 0: The Golden Knights went on the road to pick up a 25-20, 25-15, 25-17 victory.

Brandywine 3, Milford 0: The Bulldogs downed the Buccaneers by scores of 25-8, 25-11, 25-18 in a nonconference match.

Delmarva Christian 3, Worcester Prep 0: The Royals earned the victory by scores of 25-9, 25-7, 25-23.

Pacing Delmarva Christian were Gabrielle Book (7 kills, 7 aces), Hannah Picconi (7 kills, 1 ace) and Siera Jones (9 aces, 1 kill).

Boys’ soccer

Caesar Rodney 9, M.O.T. Charter 2: Thomas McPoyle netted four goals and an assist in the first half as the Riders (4-0) stayed unbeaten.

Kyle Wentling added two goals and a pair of assists for CR, which led 8-1 at halftime.

The Riders’ other goals came from Chikezie Ikwuagwu, John Spadavecchia and Monroe Hite. Nathan Reid and Dilon Rahe combined to make six saves as the Riders outshot M.O.T, 24-9.

Worcester Prep 7, Delmarva Christian 0: Worcester Prep scored four first-half goals en route to the win.

Field hockey

St. Thomas More 3, McKean 0: Three different players scored goals as the Ravens evened their record at 1-1.

Zoe Kelly and Kylie Forrest tallied first-half goals with Ally Windham scoring in the second half.

Ryan Anderson made three saves for St. Thomas More, which held advantages of 18-3 in shots and 16-3 in corners.

Worcester Prep 7, Delmarva Christian 0: Mara Agapito made 14 saves for the Royals in the loss on Monday.

College field hockey

Albright 2, Wesley 0: The Lions tallied a pair of second-half goals to down the Wolverines.

Goalie Sidney Knott notched 10 saves in just over 57 minutes of action while Bridget Wood played the final 13 minutes of the game and stopped five shots.

Kelsey Fry, Emily Wagner and Kayla Fromal each tallied a defensive save for the Wolverines.

College volleyball

UD’s Bellinger honored by CAA: Delaware sophomore outside hitter Maria Bellinger was named the Colonial Athletic Association Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.

Bellinger blasted 62 kills during the Blue Hens’ three matches, an average of 4.77 per set, and led the team with a .262 hitting percentage. She also ranked second on the squad with a 3.31 digs average, as Delaware won two of three matches.

Bellinger became the second player in school history to record consecutive matches of at least 25 kills, along with Colleen Walsh in 2006.

Bellinger, who was named to the All-Tournament Team for the fourth consecutive invitational, currently ranks third in the conference with both 4.11 kills and 4.61 points per set.
