Six Henlopen Conference teams make football tourneys

Three Henlopen Conference teams made the field for the Division I state football tournament while three more qualified for the Division II tournament, the DIAA football committee announced Sunday morning.

Smyrna , the two-time defending state champion, earned the two seed and a first round bye in Division I. Caesar Rodney and Sussex Central also made it into the six-team field.

Caesar Rodney will be playing in its first tournament since 2013. The Riders are the six seed and will meet No. 3 Hodgson on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Sussex Central is in the tournament for the second-straight season. The Golden Knights are seeded fourth and will host William Penn Friday at 7:30 p.m. It is a rematch of last year’s first round matchup where the Colonials eliminated Sussex Central.

Middletown is the top seed and has the other first round bye.

Milford, Woodbridge and Delmar are the Henlopen Conference teams in the eight-team Division II tournament.

Milford and Woodbridge will face off in the first round as the four and five seed. It will be hosted by Milford on Saturday night at 7 p.m. Woodbridge is the defending Division II champion but lost to Milford earlier this year.

Delmar, the Henlopen Conference Southern Division regular season champion, is the eight seed and will play top seed Delaware Military Academy. That game will be played at Baynard Stadium in Wilmington Friday night (7:30 p.m.).

A.I. du Pont is the second seed and will host No. 7 Howard Friday night at 7 p.m. Wilmington Friends is third and plays six seed Tower Hill Saturday at 2 p.m.

The championship is scheduled for Saturday Dec. 2 or Sunday Dec. 3 hosted at Delaware Stadium in Newark. The Division I title game will kick off at 1 p.m. with the Division II contest scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
