Unbeaten Wesley crushes NJAC foe Montclair State 56-22

MONTCLAIR, N.J. — The Wesley College football team continued its undefeated season with a 56-22 victory over New Jersey Athletic Conference rival Montclair State University at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Wolverines put together 686 yards of offense as Joe Callahan threw for 447 yards and tied a season high with six touchdown passes. Jamar Baynard rushed 28 times for 183 yards and two scores while James Okike and Bryce Shade each caught a pair of touchdown passes. Kyle George led all receivers with eight catches, 118 yards and a touchdown.

On defense, Samer Manna recorded a team-high 10 tackles while James Williamson, Dylan Cohill, and Craig Pettit each earned six tackles. Anthony Brinkley forced the defense’s only turnover of the day, picking off a Redhawks pass in the fourth quarter.

Wesley jumped out to a 21-0 lead by scoring on their first three offensive drives of the day. Callahan opened the scoring with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Cappadonna Miller, his first career touchdown catch, and followed up with back-to-back touchdown passes to Okike.

Montclair State cracked the scoreboard with a 43-yard passing touchdown from Ryan Davies to Julanee Prince, making it 21-6. Wesley answered immediately with a three-play, 75-yard drive capped by a 59-yard touchdown connection from Callahan to Shade, making it 28-6.

In the second quarter, the Wolverines and Redhawks traded scores, and MSU added a field goal to make it 35-16. In the final two minutes of the first half, Wesley put together a fast-paced two-minute drill, moving down the field on a 59-yard connection from Callahan to Baynard. Baynard capped the drive with a three yard touchdown run with 21 second remaining in the half. At the break, Wesley led 42-16.

The Wolverine offense was held scoreless in the third quarter, but added a pair of scores in the fourth frame to seal the victory.

Wesley improves to 8-0 on the season with a 7-0 mark in conference play. The team will take on local rival and NJAC foe Salisbury University on Saturday, Nov. 7. The squad will also celebrate their graduating seniors in the pre-game ceremony.
