ORANGEBURG, S.C. — For almost two full quarters, Delaware State held South Carolina State scoreless on Saturday.

And midway through the third quarter, the Hornets trailed the Bulldogs by only six.

But that was as close as DelState got before South Carolina State pulled away to a 30-19 victory over the Hornets in MEAC football at Dawson Stadium.

The loss keeps DelState winless at 0-4 in the MEAC, 0-7 overall. South Carolina State is 2-2 MEAC, 2-6 overall.

The contest was scoreless until the Bulldogs’ Farrika Grier scored on a five-yard run with only 36 seconds left before halftime.

Grier scored again on a one-yard run to start the third quarter but the Hornets blocked the PAT kick.

When DelState quarterback Jack McDaniels then scored on a four-yard run on the ensuing possession, the Hornets were behind only 13-7. The TD capped a four-play, 75-yard run that was highlighted by a 43-yard run from Brycen Alleyne.

South Carolina State, however, pushed its lead to 23-7 before the Hornets scored a couple touchdowns in the final four minutes.

McDaniels completed 18-of-36 passes for 217 yards with two TD passes and two interceptions. He threw short scoring passes to Taronn Selby (5 catches-88 yards) and Nahseem Woodard.

Alleyne finished with a team-high 96 yards on 18 carries while McDaniels added 53 nets yards on 12 carries.

For South Carolina State, quarterback Tyrece Nick completed 8-of-23 passes for 133 yards while adding a game-high 130 rushing yards on 19 carries.

DelState actually outgained the Bulldogs, 410-404, in total yards.

The Hornets host North Carolina Central next Saturday at 2 p.m. for homecoming.
