Wrestling notebook: Big guys dominating for Rider grapplers

CAMDEN — The big guys on the Caesar Rodney High wrestling team are causing big problems for the opposition.

Caesar Rodney’s two heavyweights, senior Brenden Holder (220 pounds) and freshman Kevin Hudson (285), are both undefeated in dual meets this season. They each earned key pins in CR’s victory against Sussex Central High on Wednesday night.

Holder said the addition of Hudson to the team has helped him the most because the two match up at every practice together.

“I couldn’t get better without him,” Holder said. “If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be as good as I am.”

The Riders are off to an unbeaten start at 4-0 and 2-0 in the Henlopen Conference Northern Division.

Wednesday’s win marked the end of the four-match losing streak to the Golden Knights, who are the defending Division I dual meet state champions. The Riders had not beaten Sussex Central since January of 2014.

Holder and Hudson helped tip the match in Caesar Rodney’s favor after the Riders trailed 18-0 through the first four matches.

Holder recorded a pin in the second round of his 220-pound bout before Hudson followed with a second-round pin of his own. The Riders then won five of the next seven matchups to take control.

“I just needed to do my job,” Holder said. “It was win first, pin second. Thankfully I pinned him. I think we got everything rolling.”
