Wrestling Notes: After winning Ray Oliver, Ironman next for Smyrna’s top wrestlers

SMYRNA — The wrestling season is young but the Smyrna High wrestling squad has already taken home some hardware.

The Eagles won the team title at the 47th annual Ray Oliver Tournament last weekend at McDonogh School in Maryland. It was a strong showing across the board for Delaware teams with six individual champions coming from Delaware.

Smyrna posted a pair of winners as Gabe Giampietro won the 106-pound title and J.T. Davis was victorious at 182 pounds. Sussex Central High had one champion, Jevon Saffold at 152 pounds.

Caravel Academy provided the most individual title winners with Luke Poore (113), Nick Hall (160) and Anthony Bernieri (170) all winning their respective weight classes.

Smyrna tallied 244 points, edging second-place McDonogh who ended up with 228. Caravel (185.5) was third while Sussex Central (141) finished fifth.

The Eagles were led by 13 top-fives in the 14 weight classes.

Joey Natarcola was second at 145 pounds as was Gavin Sembly at 170 pounds while Jamar Wells (120), Anthony Glass (132), Amir Pierce (138), Drew Mayhall (160), Hugo Harp (220) and Andrew DeBenedictis-Bayne (285) all earned third-place finishes.

Isaiah Jenkins (138) and Bryce Mullen (152) each finished in fourth in their respective weight classes, Dylan Andruzzi (120) was fifth while Garrett Hudson (113) and Matt Carroll (285) were sixth.

Some of Smyrna wrestlers will travel out of state again this weekend.

The Eagles and Caesar Rodney High are slated to compete at the Walsh Jesuit Ironman Tournament in Ohio today and Saturday. The prestigious tournament is celebrating its 24th year.

Five local wrestlers are seeded as the pairings were announced Thursday night.

Giampietro is seeded fifth at 106 pounds while Davis is the sixth seed at 182 pounds. Caesar Rodney’s Jackson Dean is the seventh seed at 145 pounds.

Both Caesar Rodney’s Kevin Hudson (ninth seed) and Smyrna’s Harp (10th seed) earned a seed in the heavyweight bracket.

Plenty on tap this weekend

Nearly every downstate team will be in action at one of two tournaments this weekend.

The Milford Invitational hosted by Milford High gets underway this afternoon. The semifinals and finals are scheduled for Saturday.

Milford, Caesar Rodney, Smyrna, Dover and Laurel will represent the Henlopen Conference at the meet. Conrad, Delaware Military Academy, Delcastle, Hodgson, Newark Charter, Sanford, St. Georges and William Penn are also slated to compete.

Twelve more teams will be competing at the two-day Delmar Invitational, hosted at Delmar High.

The downstate teams include, Delmar, First State Military Academy, Indian River, Lake Forest, Polytech, Seaford, Sussex Central, Sussex Tech and Woodbridge. Middletown, James M. Bennett (Md.) and Parkside (Md.) round out the field.

Bonus points

•The 27th annual Beast of the East tournament is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 21 and Sunday, Dec. 22 at the University of Delaware’s Bob Carpenter Center.
