Wrestling notes: Dover clinches first winning season in 8 years

With 11 dual meet victories this season, the Dover High wrestling team has already surpassed its total from the last two years combined.

The Senators won their 11th dual on Wednesday night with a 40-38 result over Sanford School. Dover improved to 11-3 and has clinched its first winning season in the last eight years.

Against Sanford, Dover was paced by Tykwan Joyner and Nick Lee, who had pins. Tynik Sanders recorded a major-decision for the Senators.

Dover has won four of its last five dual meets. Over that span the Senators also finished in second place of the Canal Classic two weekends ago, hosted by Middletown High.

Two of Dover’s three losses this season have come against Henlopen Conference Northern Division opposition — Smyrna and Cape Henlopen.

Dover is currently 2-2 against the Henlopen North with two more divisional matchups left on the schedule which could decide if the Senators make the Division I state dual meet tournament.

Dover travels to Sussex Central on Wednesday and hosts crosstown rival Caesar Rodney on Friday, both contests are scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Before that though, the Senators have a non-divisional matchup at Milford tongith at 6:30 p.m.

Drummond leads McDaniel in pins this season and has won the Centennial Conference’s Wrestler of the Week award twice. This past weekend Drummond, who wrestles at 141 pounds for McDaniel, earned a pin and a major-decision in a Centennial Conference tri-meet.

Wuest won a match via decision at 174 pounds over the weekend.
