Wrestling notes: Milford and Delmar host tournaments this weekend

Sussex Central’s Rashad Stratton

Some Henlopen Conference wrestling rivalries will be renewed as the Milford Invitational takes place this weekend.

Four conference foes are scheduled to compete. The hosts Milford, Smyrna, Caesar Rodney and Sussex Central are part of the 10-team field.

First round matches begin today at 4 p.m. The action will resume on Saturday at 9 a.m. with the final round taking place later that afternoon.

Sussex Central and Smyrna are well-acquainted with each other. The two teams met for the Division I state dual meet championship last season and Sussex Central avenged a regular season defeat to the Eagles to take home the state title.

Sussex Central is also the defending meet champion, edging out Milford and Smyrna, who came in second and third respectively in 2016. Caesar Rodney did not compete at Milford last season.

Sussex Central had four individual champions last season but only one of those did not graduate, Rashad Stratton, who is the defending 126-pound state champion.

Smyrna’s Greg Baum

Milford went on to win the Division II state dual meet championship last season. The Buccaneers have a pair of defending meet champions back this year, Robbie Rosser (113) and Bevensky Augustin.

Smyrna’s defending individual winners from last year are Greg Baum, who won at 132, and Tony Wuest (195).

St. Georges, William Penn, Delcastle, Hodgson, Middletown and Wilmington Christian round out the 10-team field.

Delmar Invitational debuts

Delmar High is hosting an invitational of its own this weekend for the first time.

Henlopen Conference teams slated to wrestle are Delmar, Polytech, Cape Henlopen, Lake Forest, Woodbridge, Sussex Tech, Indian River, Laurel and Seaford.

Conrad, St. Charles, Md., Parkside, Md. and Nandua, Va. round out the field. The first round begins at 3:30 p.m., this afternoon and Saturday’s bouts are scheduled for 8:30 a.m.

• The 25th annual Beast of the East tournament is scheduled for next weekend at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark. Action begins at 8 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. On Friday night, Ohio State and Princeton will have an NCAA dual meet (8 p.m.).
